Free Crochet Bucket Hat Pattern: The perfect quick project!

Crochet a cute and trendy bucket hat for summer with this free, easy-to-follow pattern.
This simple crochet bucket hat pattern is a quick and fun summer project that is great for gifting. I freehanded this basic bucket hat pattern while I was on a plane to Fiji and realised I had no hats with me (d'oh!). I got many compliments on it during our trip, which encouraged me to write up the pattern for others to enjoy ☀
This pattern is for an adult-sized bucket hat, and it's the perfect project for both new crocheters just learning to read patterns right through to experienced crocheters looking for a quick project to work up.
Materials
Weight 3 yarn: This pattern uses two strands of yarn held together while crocheting. It is recommended to use two 100g skeins of any weight 3, DK weight, or 8-ply yarn.
The pattern uses approximately 70g of each yarn. The example hat was made with Bango's Blend from Patti and Bango's Place. Alternatively, you can work with a thicker yarn and not hold it double! Friends have made this in MooMoo's Magic for a cosier winter version of this hat, and not double stranded as it's a thicker yarn.
6mm hook: I use a 6mm hook for double-stranding Bango's Blend, but choose a hook size that suits your chosen yarn and gauge.
Tapestry needle: For weaving in those pesky ends!
Scissors: Unless you'd like to carry aroung the unfinished skeins of yarn attached to your hat as a statement piece. To that I say - to each their own!
Gauge
The first 5 rounds of the pattern should measure approximately 18 cm (7 inches) in diameter. The pattern below notes when you should check for this as a reminder.
Abbreviations (US terminology)
- MR: magic ring
- dc: double crochet
- inc: increase (2 dc in the same stitch)
- ss: slip stitch
- FLO: front loop only (optional for the brim of the hat)
- R: Round/Row
Notes
- You will double-strand your yarn throughout the pattern, meaning you will use two strands of yarn as one. Alternatively, you can use a thicker yarn and use it on its own.
- Repeat stitches marked between asterisks.
- At the end of each round, slip stitch (ss) to the first stitch of the round and chain 2 to start the next round.
Pattern
R1: 12 dc in MR (12)
R2: inc x 12 (24)
R3: *dc, inc* x 12 (36)
R4: *2dc, inc* x 12 (48)
R5: *3dc, inc* x 12 (60)
Check your gauge here: it should be approximately 18cm (7 inches) in diameter.
R6-10: dc in each stitch around (60)
I like to try on my hat at this point - it should sit just above your ears! Feel free to add or remove rows to achieve this.
R11: *4dc, inc* x 12 (72)
Optional: Work this round into the FLO of the previous round for a more distinct brim.
R12: *5dc, inc* x 12 (84)
R13: *6dc, inc* x 12 (96)
